United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) defined Youth as a period of transition from the dependence
of childhood to adulthood’s independence and awareness of our interdependence
as members of a community. Generally youth is someone who is loaded a lot of
hope by people. Youth is a potential identity. Yet, both the ancient era and
modern era are different to define what the youth is. In the colonial era,
Indonesia defines youth as a generation who was expected being able to get
freedom from the colonialism. In the modern era, the challenges are bigger.
Youth is expected being able to continue the previous generation. The youth’s
standing is so strategic to continue the nation’s hoping and growth. The thing
which can be taken to solve the problems in both periods is spirit.
Yore,
primordialism was the only one ism practiced by youth. It caused practicing
nationalism less that will make disadvantages for Indonesia. It was massively
formed the primordialism organizations which was well-known as Jong such as
Jong java, Jong sumatera etc. It made them face the colonial by their own ways.
Whereas, if each of Jongs made a co-operation, it would make a unity. It would
be so good that youth got easy to face colonial. The presence of Youth pledge
is an existence of unity appearing loyalty and nationalism’s youth for
Indonesia. The essences of youth pledge are the things which are able to unite
youth of Indonesia. Finally, youth pledge can reach its goal namely uniting the
youth of Indonesia who were able to take the colonial out from this nation with
nationalism appeared.
Unfortunately, nowadays, the youth consider that the
youth pledge is only as a written pledge which is no meaning done by youth at
that time. Because of that assumption, the nationalism in youth are faded and probably
gone. That frame caused youth get nationalism less and individualism more. It
is absolutely not the characteristic of Indonesian.
We need to know that youth pledge actually is
available until now and future. The presence of Youth Pledge is taking way for
Indonesian, especially youth. It is the way to show the characteristic of
Indonesian. In this era, Youth Pledge is something which is able to tell how
the history was. How the spirit of youth was appeared, it is caused by Youth
Pledge. Because the first motive of it
is to appear the spirit of youth for nationalism. It is not different at this
time, Youth Pledge for Youth spirit, collaborating for the best of characterized
Indonesia.
